ZAPPHY - I have visited your website and listened (more than once) your album (In a room) and I may say that it is really good! But why did you decide to make an album (voice and guitar / acoustic) and not followed by a band?
Jordyn Shellhart - First of all, thank you for listening! I decided to create an acoustic album because that's what I had access to at the time. Not everyone can go in the studio at make an album for hundreds of thousands of dollars. I couldn't. So a group of us set out to prove that it wasn't necessary. You can make the music you want to make despite whatever budget you might have.
ZAPPHY - I really love the album conception... great music and low cost! Did you decide to do this to prove that good music doesn't necessarily need to be costly? I loved it because if it cost less to be produced, it may cost less to the costumers and maybe minimize the illegal copies around the world, no?
Jordyn Shellhart - Well with this particular record, you're getting 15 songs for $10 at a time when individual songs online are anywhere from $0.99 to $1.29 each. It's definitely a bargain. Who knows if that would make someone more willing to buy it as opposed to downloading it illegally or not, but those who do are getting a deal.
ZAPPHY - Your songs really got me, and specially "Snowflake falling". Although it is a public album, it has many songs that are all about you and your life right? Is this what you sing in "heaven knows"?
Jordyn Shellhart - As a songwriter, it's almost impossible to avoid writing about yourself. That's what you know best, so it's just natural that it will show through your lyrics. My life is all over this album. I truly believe that if you listen to my songs, you can find out more about me than you might from talking to me for a year.
ZAPPHY - How is the relation with the radio stations in the USA? I ask this because the album has many great songs that can be easily played in any pop or country station. How has the media, in an overall, accepted this work from you?
Jordyn Shellhart - In order to be played on the radio, an artist will release what's called a single and the radio stations will play that. The album is usually released after that. In this situation, we released the entire album up front without a single, so the media was more on the internet and things like interviews with GAC. Overall with the amount of advertising that went into this album (which was very little), the attention it has gotten has been a very pleasant surprise.
ZAPPHY - Something the really bothers me is the fact that there are so many good bands, but the radios still playing the obvious. In your opinion, will the internet be THE alternative for the radio stations or do you think that it must come something new... a new way to reach people?
Jordyn Shellhart - The great thing about the music industry today is that there are no limits to the amount of music that can be reached by a consumer. Anyone can find something they like because there are so many outlets. Radio isn't the only option, so if someone doesn't like what's on the radio they can find what they do like online or through a friend or even on TV. Music has definitely taken over pop culture.
ZAPPHY - After "In a room", what are your plans? When will a new album come out? Will you keep the "low cost" or do you think that it is time to release a more costly album?
Jordyn Shellhart - Right now, I'm focusing on writing for the next album and occasionally experimenting in the studio. As far as the cost of the next album, I'm not planning to make a strictly acoustic album like "In A Room," and I definitely have musicians in mind that I want to play on it which is going to cost more, but my style of music just doesn't require a huge budget. I like to sound more organic and sparse, so I'm just going to try and make it sound like I want. I don't like to think about the cost if I can help it.
ZAPPHY - Here, in Brazil, the country music is really well accepted and there are some radios that play only this kind of music. Will be there a chance to you come to Brazil? When will Brazil get to know more about Jordyn's good music?
Jordyn Shellhart - I would go to Brazil in a heartbeat if I could! I've always wanted to visit. It looks like a beautiful country. Right now, I have no idea when I'll be able to make it but I'll definitely cross my fingers. As far as Brazilians getting ahold of my music, word of mouth and the internet are our best tools! I'm just trying to spread the word one person at a time and there have been so many amazing people to help me out with that. Things like this make a huge difference, too, so thank you so much!
ZAPPHY - A message to our readers and to all Jordyn's fans.
Jordyn Shellhart - I love you, I love you, I love you :) Thank you so much for reading this. You're the best.
